Re-Formation · Understanding Persistent Pain

Your Pain Has
a Story.

What is your pain telling you? What if it’s telling you more than where it hurts?

You know the pain is real. But what if understanding why it continues requires us to look beyond the place where you feel it?

Your experiences, emotions, expectations and the meaning attached to what happened may all be part of the story.

What if understanding how a response was formed could help us discover how that response can change?
Start With Curiosity

Why am I still hurting?

Maybe the original injury happened months ago. Maybe it happened years ago.

Maybe you’ve been told everything looks normal—but what you’re feeling certainly doesn’t feel normal.

Why does the pain change from one day to another?
Why can stress make it feel stronger?
Why do certain movements already feel dangerous?
Why can my body react before anything has even happened?
Why does the pain sometimes continue after the original injury has healed?
So perhaps we need another question.
What if the reason your pain continues isn’t always the same reason it began?

These questions don’t make the pain less real. They help us become curious about the whole story instead of looking only at the symptom.

Follow the Story

Pain doesn’t happen in a vacuum.

An experience happens. We interpret what it means. Emotion becomes involved. The body responds.

When responses repeat, they can become familiar. And over time, what was once a response to an event can begin influencing what we expect next.

And eventually…

The body may begin responding not only to what happened, but to what it has learned to expect.
The Science of Persistent Pain

Your pain is real. And your nervous system can change.

Pain is not simply a measurement of tissue damage. It is an experience influenced by information coming from the body together with context, previous experience, attention, expectation and other factors.

In some persistent pain conditions, the nervous system can become increasingly sensitive and responsive. Understanding that gives us a different way to think about why pain can persist.

An Important Possibility If the nervous system can change in one direction, what becomes possible if it can change in another?
01

Nervous System Sensitivity

Explore how the nervous system can become increasingly responsive to signals.

02

Expectation + Pain

Explore how previous experiences and anticipation can influence what we experience now.

03

Fear + Movement

Discover how fear of pain can influence caution, movement and avoidance.

04

Attention + Meaning

Explore how attention and the meaning attached to sensations can influence the experience of pain.

This Is Where Re-Formation Begins

What if you became curious about your pain instead of only trying to fight it?

Re-Formation isn’t asking you to deny your pain. It isn’t asking you to pretend the injury never happened. And it isn’t simply positive thinking.

It is an invitation to understand what has been established, recognize what is happening in the present and create an opportunity for a different response.

01

Formation

How did this response become established?

02

Recognition

What is happening in me right now?

03

Re-Formation

What becomes possible when the response changes?

Not denying pain Not ignoring injury Not positive thinking Not blaming yourself
